GTA Sabha seal on ‘invitee’ resolution

Bimal Gurung
Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, Aug. 8. The GTA today adopted the resolution to include “invitee” memb ers in its Sabha and said the party had already discussed the matter with the chief minister.
Roshan Giri, a Sabha executive member and senior Morcha leader, said: “We had already discussed the issue with chief minister Mamata Banerjee. We can incorporate invitee members. These members will not have any voting rights but can attend all the meetings and give their suggestions.”
Giri did not say clearly if the Mamata had given her consent on the matter. His assertion that the chief minister was aware about the Morcha’s resolution came when he was asked how the members could be included to the Sabha when the GTA Act has no provision for it.
The Morcha yesterday announced the names of 10 “invitee” members, six of whom are from the Terai and Dooars. John Barla, the leader of the breakaway faction of the Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad, was among them.
The Terai and Dooars are not part of the GTA area yet but both Gurung and Barla want it to be included.
The 45 elected councillors today met at Lal Khoti to pass the resolution today. After the meeting, Giri said: “Today we passed a resolution to incorporate invitee members in the GTA Sabha. The resolution will be sent to Calcutta immediately.”
Giri also said that the principal secretary of the GTA was trying to fix an appointment for a Sabha team to meet the Prime Minister, Union home minister, the governor and Mamata. “We are trying to meet them soon,” he said.
Input from KalimNews: The invitees from Dooars and plains are John Barla, Saraswati Pradhan and Ashok Lama, from the Dooars and Pravin Singh, Dina Chhetri and P. Arjun from Terai. The hill invitees are Tshering Tamang, Latika Sinha and Bandana Yonzone from Kalimpong and Sabitri Chhetri from Kurseong.
IE, Kolkata, Aug 9: The Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) board on Wednesday adopted its first resolution for inclusion of nine invitee members in the GTA from Terai, Dooars, Kurseong and Kalimpong. The GTA adopted the resolution at a high-level meeting, and selected the nine invitees — including three members from the Dooars, three from Terai, one from Kurseong and two from Kalimpong. The three invitee members from Dooars are rebel adivasi leader Jhon Barla, Ashok Kama and Saraswati Pradhan. Their names had been mentioned in the list of proposed candidates by the GJM to the state government. However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is said to have rejected all three names, which resulted in resentment among the Gorkhas living in Terai and Dooars region.
The invitee candidates are yet to know their responsibilities. “I was informed that my name has been proposed and accepted as an invitee member in the GTA. But I don’t know what role I will play in the GTA. I will hold a meeting with the GJM president soon on the issue,” said Jhon Barla.
Wilson Chapramari, GJM MLA from the Dooars region, said, “The posts offered are mainly symbolic. It is to show that Dooars and Terai regions have representation in GTA.”
