GJM president Gurung meets Mamata to discuss preparations for the swearing-in of GTA members on Saturday
TH: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) president Bimal Gurung met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee here on Tuesday to discuss preparations for the swearing-in of members of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) this Saturday.
The GJM is all set to take control of the GTA, with its party’s candidates in 28 of the 45 constituencies winning unopposed. Elections to the remaining 17 constituencies were held on July 29.
“We discussed the preparations for the programme scheduled on August 4, where the Chief Minister of the State and Union Home Minister will be present,” said Mr. Gurung, who was accompanied by GJM general secretary Roshan Giri.
He said that he was in Kolkata in connection with a matter pending before the Calcutta High Court, and had decided to visit his “home” — the State Secretariat — during his stay in the city.
The Calcutta High Court had last month admitted a case by Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) president Subhas Ghising, challenging the Constitutional validity of the GTA Act.
Later, the Court asked the State Government and the GJM to file an affidavit in the case, and noted that the new board formed under the GTA will have to abide by the Court’s order on the matter.
When asked about the members nominated to the GTA, Mr. Gurung said that there will be three representatives of the State Government, while the rest will be nominated by the GJM.
Though five members can be nominated to GTA, he said that the number could be increased if required.
