TT; Calcutta, Nov. 2: The probe into the exhibition of fake paintings of Rabindranath Tagore has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department from Calcutta police, D.P. Singh, deputy commissioner of police (central), said on Thursday.
In an order issued by the home department at Writers’ Buildings three days ago, the CID was asked to conduct the investigation against three accused — Dipali Bhatttacharya, former principal of the Government College of Art & Craft, artist Jogen Chowdhury and Jayanta Banerjee of Dhanbad, from whom the paintings were allegedly sourced — whose names were mentioned in a complaint lodged with the New Market police station.
“Since the complaint was lodged with a police station in our jurisdiction, we were supposed to carry out the probe. Other than New Market police station, sleuths of the detective department were also investigating the matter. But the government decided to engage the CID, keeping us aside,” said an officer at the Lalbazar police headquarters on Thursday.
The CID is the agency that investigates crimes across the state outside the jurisdiction of Calcutta police. The exhibition of the fake Tagore paintings was organised in 2011 at the art college in Chowringhee, under the jurisdiction of Calcutta police. On October 19, the police had written to the security control office asking it to inform the immigration departments at airports to ensure that Bhattacharya cannot leave the country.
