The five-member team of the Hill Congress headed by its President KB Chettri met the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and other Ministers of States before Dusshera concerning the issues of the Hills.
The Darjeeling District Hill Congress General Secretary Shanti Kumar Sharma talking to the media today said that the team talked about the endowment for Union Territory (UT), which has been the inseparable demand of the party from long back.
The team also demanded the reservation policies and the increase of the governmental representatives in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
The demand for the increse of the panchayats has also been made he informed a. The Union Minister has specified affirmative assurances on the demands placed by the party said Sharma.
The Hill Congress during the time of Indira Gandhi had asked for the same which was blown away by the tornado of the Gorkhaland agitation. The party has renewed its demand concerninng the same now as tice the Gorkhaland agitation has ended unsucessful.
Sharma said that they do not have mass support in the Hills but will be soon conducting awareness programme on the same.
General Secretary Dilip Pradhan said that the people of the Hills always wanted to secede away from the West Bengal, which can only be possible through Gorkhaland or UT. The people has agitated twice for Gorkhaland and failed, time has come they should strive for the UT he added.
The team also met the veteran congress leaders, which included Shakil Ahmed, RC Kuntiya, Birendra Kataria, MP AH Khan and expressed their woes.
The five member team had President Chettri accompanied by Vice President PB Ghatani, Treasurer Surendra Parekh, Secretary Shanti Kumar Sharma and Dilip Pradhan.
