The GTA councilor, Prof Kalyan Dewan along with the Chief Whip, Government of Sikkim, Ugen T Gyatso today laid the foundation for the new SUMI School building at Nimbong during the occasion of Teacher’s Day.
The construction of the new building is a part of the SUMI’s 125th foundation day anniversary celebrations. Chief Whip Gyatso is an alumnus of the SUMI.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Dewan said that the occasion is a historic event for Nimbong. Remembering Rev Mac Farlene he added that 126 years ago he had come to Kalimpong and established SUMI which has further gave birth to present Kalimpong.
A history can be written on the contributions made by the SUMI, he stated. Prof Dewan further assured of all necessary help through GTA for the construction of the new building.
Similarly, Chief Whip Gyatso in his speech assured to contributing from his part to the construction.
Expressing his gratitude towards his alma mater, Gyatso said that whatever he has accomplished today is all because of SUMI. “I am here not as a Chief Whip of the Government of Sikkim but as an alumnus of the School,” he added.
The Principal of SUMI is his turn said that since long he was thinking of establishing a School at Nimbong.
He also expressed his gratitude towards the support which he got from his staffs and students throughout. The establishment of a new building is a commemoration to all those great souls who have affected our lives in their own ways.
Father Rev Samuel Lepcha, Rev Dr Jagat Sahara Rai and Rev ST Lepcha conducted a prayer service earlier during the programme.
