kalimpong mukesh::With an aim to spread awareness about environment and to make Kalimpong pollution free on the eve of World Environment Day- 2012, the Kalimpong Municipality in the presence of the Ward Councilors today took out a rally along with the School students. The rally after encircling the town ended at Damber Chowk. The Municipality Vice President, Ganga Maya Gurung along with the Ward Councilors and the Deputy Magistrate, HS Roy were present during the occasion.
The Municipality Vice President during her address notified that all the shops of Kalimpong will be distributed a dustbin each in order to keep the town clean. Though the Municipality workers are doing their best in keeping the town clean, still the local public also needs to cooperate by not littering the areas as soon as it is cleaned. Hence, it is a must that the public should be well aware about environmental cleanliness, she asserted. “It lies in the hands of the general public to keep their respective surroundings and areas clean”, she stated. It is saddening to see that people instead of throwing the garbage in the bins are throwing them all over the place, therefore littering the area, added Gurung.
Likewise, the Deputy Magistrate directed the people to think the town as their own home and contribute in keeping it clean. Speaking about the garbage dumping issue of the town, Roy underlined that a solution should be found in cooperation between the public, Municipality and the Administration.
Also during the said occasion the students of Scottish Universities Mission Institution (SUMI) conducted weeding of the 10, 000 saplings which were planted last year at various places. They also watered the plants and counted them to keep a check on its number. It was found during the survey that out of 10, 000 saplings planted last year more than 9000 were safe.
Likewise, various programmes related to environment were conducted by the students of different Schools in their respective Schools. A quiz competition, elocution and painting competition was also held at the Jubilee High School. A cleanliness drive was also carried out in the School premises.
