Much hitch in the house construction scheme by the Municipality, Sundas demands justice for the poor

MUKESH SHARMA KALIMPONG, May 23: TARA SUNDAS A total amount of six crores thirty lakhs and eighty eight thousand was allotted for the construction of 567 houses under the Kalimpong Municipality Area. From this, an amount of five crores eighty lakhs was kept separately for management of electricity, road connectivity and other basic needs. In order to get the houses which were to be constructed by the Municipality, these 567 families were directed to deposit Rs 20, 500/- in the bank. But the poor families due to the unavailability of the finances could not deposit the said amount and hence, they were recommended to take a loan from the bank of Rs 20, 500/- each. The bank now records that out of 567 houses, 523 has been built. The granted loan was supposed to be returned within 10 years, but now the Municipality has released a notice asking the people to return the said loan. Commenting on this matter, the Communist Party of Marxist (India) (CPM) politician, Tara Sundas asserted that the bank has not provided the poor people with any amount of loan, so there is no point in returning it. Either, the Municipality is unaware, or the bank has not at all informed the Municipality about this, he underlined. When asked the bank Manager about the issue, he acquainted that the said scheme has ended in March 2012. The money was never given to the people; instead it will be deposited in the Municipality’s account after the inspection of whether the houses were built or not, he added. Further, the Manager enquired that how can the Municipality issue a notice when the money has not been distributed? After the situation being enlightened by the CPM, the Manager appealed to the Municipality on behalf of the CPM to firstly inspect whether the houses have been built or not. And also to check where the hitch has been made, those found guilty will be punishable according to the law, he asserted. What the poor people are going through is not at all right, he concluded.
